The Tanners' Suite
The Tanners' Room forms part of an extension to St. Mary's Guildhall, added in the mid 19th century to provide more office accommodation for the City Council. The Ante Room to the Tanner's Room, however, dates from the 15th century, and was leased by the Draper's Company as a meeting room in the 16th and 17th centuries.
As with many of the rooms at St. Mary's Guildhall, the Tanner's Room is named after one of the many medieval trade guilds that regulated branches of the cloth industry, the primary source of Coventry 's medieval wealth and importance. The role of the Tanner was to prepare animal skins for leather manufacture.
